Wyoming  Clarinet Day - Joshua Mietz, Director, with VIP Timothy Phillips

Casper, Wyoming USA

by Joshua R. Mietz

On October 15th, 2016, Casper College, with the support of the Casper College Fine Arts Endowment Fund with help from the Casper College School of Fine Arts and Humanities, is pleased to report the successful completion of the the first-ever Wyoming Clarinet Day featuring guest artist, Dr. Timothy Phillips of Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

The day began with a collage recital featuring Dr. Kellan Toohey and Dr. Joshua R. Mietz of Casper College.  Toohey, the clarinet instructor at Laramie County Community College, performed Weber’s Grand Duo Concertant, Op. 48 with pianist Cecillia Kao. Mietz, the clarinet instructor at Casper College, performed Andy Firth’s 3 Pieces for Solo Jazz Clarinet and Brahms Trio, Op. 114 with his Casper College colleagues Scott Schwab, piano and Christine Dunbar, cello.

Following the morning recital, the festival continued with a clarinet choir reading session. Participants performed new arrangements of Mietz’s as well favorites from the Clarinet Institute of Los Angeles’s digital library. Mietz’s newest arrangement, Wyoming, received its premiere performance at this session.

After lunch, the festival featured student performers in a master class conducted by Phillips. Phillips entertained and educated students with his unique brand of humor and charm mixed with his solid approach to clarinet pedagogy. Seven students performed works from Weber’s Concertino, Wyoming All-State audition excerpts, All-Northwest audition excerpts, and selected solo repertoire from students’ lessons. Following Phillips’s master class, Mietz presented a session called: Taming the Butterflies: Auditions, Performance Anxiety, and Meditation, whereby he guided attendees through a successful audition and showed them how to acquire the right headspace for their best performances.

The festival concluded with a stunning recital by Phillips who performed well-known works from Finzi and Mendelssohn, lesser-known gems of the repertoire by Traci Mendel and Michele Mangani, and the premiere of a new work, Evan’s Haven, by Carl Vollrath. This charming piece is dedicated to Phillips’s son, Evan. To date, Vollrath has written two works inspired by the Phillips children (Evan’s Haven and Little Violet) and Phillips performed both of them at this recital. D’Addario Woodwinds graciously donated door prizes that were randomly drawn and given to clarinet students at the performance.

The Wyoming Clarinet Day would like to extend a sincere thank you to the following groups who helped make this event possible: the Casper College Fine Arts Endowment, the Wyoming Clarinet Day was sponsored in part by the Buffet Group USA, D’Addario Woodwinds, and the World Clarinet Alliance (WKA). Thank you for all your help, and see you in 2017!
