Timothy Phillips - Professor of Clarinet - Troy State University (Alabama)

Biography

             Timothy Phillips is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the John M. Long School of
Music at Troy University, principal clarinetist of the Northwest Florida Symphony
Orchestra, and president of the Higher Education Division of the Alabama Music
Educators Association. In addition to teaching applied clarinet at Troy University,
he teaches music history, class woodwinds, and conducts the clarinet choir. Each
spring he hosts Troy University Clarinet Day, which brings high school, college,
and professional clarinetists together at the John M. Long School of Music for
performances and master classes. He also hosts a weekly program on Troy
University Public Radio called “Clarinet Corner.”
 
Timothy has performed at previous International Clarinet Festivals, Alabama
Music Educators Conferences, and at the College Music Society National
Conference. As soloist, he has performed with Concerto Avenna (Warsaw,
Poland), the Troy University Symphony Band, Troy University Concert Chorale,
Troy University Percussion Ensemble, University of Illinois Symphonic Band, and
University of Illinois Summer Band. He has also performed with Sinfonia da
Camera in Illinois. An active proponent of music by living composers, Phillips has
premiered works by Don Bowyer, Alain Mayrand, Traci Mendel, and Carl Vollrath.
 
In recent years, he has performed and taught at Clarimania, a bi-annual event
held at the Karol Lipinski Academy of Music in Wrocław, Poland. In 2010, he
served on the jury for the International Woodwind Instruments Competition in
Warsaw, Poland with clarinetists Florent Héau, Ludmila Peterkova, and Nicolas
Fargeix. He presented his paper “The Longing Voice: Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem
Felsen” at the 2004 International Clarinet Festival in College Park, Maryland. In
the spring of 2011, he premiered his version of the Concerto for Violin and
Orchestra in A minor, Op. 3, No. 6 by Antonio Vivaldi with the International
Clarinet Choir, organized by the Tramurei Clarinet Ensemble, in New York City.
 
Timothy completed the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in
clarinet performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He
earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado
at Boulder. His principal teachers included: J. David Harris, Daniel Silver, Bil
Jackson, and Philip Aaholm.
 
Timothy is a member of the International Clarinet Association, Phi Kappa Phi
Academic Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, College
Music Society, MENC: The National Association for Music Education, National
Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and College Band
Directors National Association. In addition, he received the Albert Austin Harding
Award from the University of Illinois Bands and the Phi Kappa Phi Artist Award
from the Troy University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.
