Memorial Celebration for Leon Russianoff - 26 years after his passing away in 1990 - Manhattan School of Music - VIP Charles Neidich and Mike Getzin, Directors

On Sunday, February 14, the Manhattan School will host a day long memorial celebration for Leon Russianoff. Russianoff, one of the greatest and most beloved and most colorful clarinet teachers of the 20th century and one of the most important forces elevating the American School of clarinet playing to its position of preeminence passed away 25 years ago.

Although the exact schedule is still not set, the day will feature performances by many of his students, videos of some of his master classes, reminiscences and discussion about his importance to the world of the clarinet and will end with everyone participating in a clarinet choir farewell to the great master.

The day will also serve, hopefully, to resuscitate the Russianoff Memorial scholarship fund at the Manhattan School which his wife, Penny Russianoff, established but which has been dormant for several years.

Former students are urged to participate and honor their teacher and participate in the above activities. Many of the legendary former students are vitally interested in participating.  Please let everyone know, and contact Charles Neidich at cneidich@aol.com   or Mike Getzin at mikegetzin@hotmail.com

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Music and the Chattanooga Clarinet Choir are joining forces again to present the River City Clarinet Winter Festival 2016, now in its fifth season. Open to student (high school and college), amateur, and professional clarinetists, the event will be held on the UTC campus on Saturday, January 15-16, 2016.

Featured artists for this year’s festival will be Dr. J. David Harris (Associate Professor of Clarinet, University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign), Dr. Brian Viliunas (Assistant Professor of Clarinet, Samford University), Dr. David McClune (Professor of Clarinet, Union University), Dr. Elizabeth Aleksander (Assistant Professor of Clarinet, University of Tennessee–Martin), Mr. Nicholas Hartline (artistic director, Chattanooga Clarinet Choir), and Dr. Nikolasa Tejero (Assistant Professor of Clarinet, University of Tennessee–Chattanooga).

The activities will include lectures, a masterclass, the guest artists’ recital, and the popular festival clarinet choir.

This year’s corporate sponsors are d’Addario, Vandoren, Ken Stanton Music, Buffet- Crampon, Rodriguez Musical Services, and Luyben Music. The exhibit room will include a repair station courtesy of Jonathan Cathell and Consistent-C Instrument Repair. This event is made possible by generous funding by the Tennessee Arts Commission, ArtsBuild, the UTC Music Department, and the Performing Arts League of Chattanooga.

For the third year, we will host the RCCWF Young Artist Solo Competition. Clarinetists in high school and college are eligible to compete for a chance to perform in a masterclass and again at the festival choir concert. There will be a preliminary recorded audition round, and the final round of competition will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016, on the UTC campus.
