Trio de Clarone on American Tour
With its dark-toned, melancholy sound and unusual shape, the bassett horn is a rarity in the clarinet family—and the concert hall. However, no composer accomplished more for this expressive instrument than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote numerous works for the horn, including five luminous Divertimenti. Fueled by a fascination with the horn’s sound, the German clarinet virtuoso Sabine Meyer, her brother Wolfgang, and husband Reiner Wehle formed Trio di Clarone in 1983.
For nearly three decades, this trio has paired Mozart’s ingenious works with important present-day compositions and occasionally ventured into colorful collaborations with jazz and blues musicians. Bringing with it a sound The Detroit News called “an eloquent, illuminating expression of chamber music,” the trio will perform a program including Mozart, Francis Poulenc, Bach, and Stravinsky.

Each year the NIU Clarinet Cornucopia features outstanding guest artist performances and master classes around a central theme. Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin clarinetists of all ages and abilities come together for learning, camaraderie and fun.
The Cornucopia Clarinet Choir provides an opportunity for everyone to perform. Various sessions address topics such as music for the clarinet, practice techniques, equipment and auditions. Vendors come with the latest equipment for clarinetists to try.
The Clarinet Cornucopia is hosted by Greg Barrett, NIU clarinet faculty, with assistance from the students in the NIU Clarinet Studio and the Office of External Programs.

Expert testimony from the jazz world comes from the eminent jazz critic Leonard
Feather, who said of Eddie, "It is a rare event in jazz where one man can all
but reinvent an instrument bringing it to a new stage of revolution."
In a major coup for St Edmund's School, Grammy award winning Eddie Daniels will
be holding a masterclass and performing in an evening concert with the David
Rees-Williams Trio. This comes three days after his appearance with the LSO at
The Barbican.

Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day is a one-day festival at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau that features clarinet and saxophone master classes, performances, clinics and more. Single Reed Day events are open to students, teachers, amateurs, professionals, and all those interested in the clarinet and/or saxophone. Admission is free to all events during the day for Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day. The evening concert is a ticketed event with tickets available at the door. High school seniors and potential transfer students may audition for a music scholarship during Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day. I am really excited to announce the 2012 Texas Clarinet Colloquium
which will again be held on the Texas A&M University-Commerce
campus. The dates for this year's event are February 17 & 18, 2012.
This event is FREE and open to the public!!!
We will be hosting the classes, lectures, and exhibits in the Sam Rayburn Student Center. This is the facility that hosted the 2010 Northeast Texas Clarinet Day. The exhibitors will be situated in a walk-through area just outside of the classrooms and rehearsal rooms on the second floor (Saturday only 9:00-4:00). As we did for the 2011 Texas Clarinet Colloquium, our recitals and concerts will once again take place in the beautiful new Music Building at the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus. [Our Student Center is located just Southeast of the Music Building. The travel time is about a 3 minute walk.] I am thrilled to announce that our Guest Artists for the event include Michael Webster, Mitchell Estrin, Howard Klug, Michael Lowenstern, Paula Corley, and many artists from around Texas. I will be launching the new website in the next two weeks so that you will be able to see all of the exciting events we have planned. Here is a tentative short list:

The UCF Music Department is proud to announce the Twenty-second Annual UCF Clarinet Day. This will be a day of clarinet activities designed for high school and community college clarinet players, including performances, workshop, and a mass clarinet choir reading session. Registration will begin at 12:00 noon in the lobby of the Rehearsal Hall on the UCF campus, and events will run from 12:30 to 5:00 PM. The cost is $25; free parking is available. Bring your clarinet to play in the clarinet choir!
Our guest artist this year will be Eric Mandat, the noted contemporary clarinet artist and composer. Audiences around the world are attracted to his imaginative compositions, and his ability to create new sounds with the clarinet.
Clarinetist and composer Eric Mandat is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary clarinet music. The Chicago Reader states, "Mandat is exploring new worlds with a unique combination of virtuosity and a creative use of multiphonics...he uses them to create highly personal and expressive compositions that...are loaded with musical meaning." The Village Voice notes the "suave physicality of his presence as a performer, and finds his style to be “riveting.” Mandat tours world-wide as a soloist and chamber musician, presenting lectures and recitals featuring new American clarinet music as well as traditional repertoire. He has premiered his works at international conferences in Chicago, Stockholm, Tokyo, Vancouver, and Porto, and has appeared as soloist with the Latvian National Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony. Mandat is a member of the Chicago Symphony's MusicNOW ensemble, which recently performed works by Elliott Carter and Bruno Mantovani under the direction of Maestro Pierre Boulez. He also performs with The Transatlantic Trio, which has concertized in the United States and Europe. Of the group’s recording of trios by Brahms and d'Indy, Fanfare states they "easily rank with the best available recording. Highly recommended!"

worldwide. An accomplished clarinet...ist,
Mr. Gilad has performed with the
Marlboro Music Festival, Bowdoin
Music Festival, San Francisco
Chamber Music Festival and the
Israel Philharmonic. He has
collaborated as a performer and
conductor with many of today’s most
prominent artists including Gil
Shaham, Jeffery Kahane, Sara Chang,
Joseph Kalichstein, Vladimir
Feltsman and David Jolley.
Hailed as one of today’s most dynamic and charismatic conductors, Mr. Gilad served as conductor and music director of the Colonial Symphony of New Jersey from 1988 until 2003. Under his leadership, the orchestra became the only one in the area to receive an NEA grant for seven consecutive years, and was also recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its artistry and programming merits. Mr. Gilad’s guest conducting appearances have brought him critical acclaim in both the United States and Europe, where he has conducted throughout Spain, Sweden, Germany and France. In 1987 he became the first Israeli-born conductor to perform in China and has since conducted numerous engagements in Beijing and Shanghai. In addition to his guest conducting engagements, Mr. Gilad serves as music director of the Colburn Orchestra, Herbert Zipper Orchestra of Los Angeles, the USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra and the 20th Century Unlimited concert series in Santa Fe, New Mexico. From 1982 until 1988 Mr. Gilad was music director of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gilad has also had an instrumental role in the founding and forming of several notable chamber ensembles and festivals. From 1982–1993 he directed the Malibu Strawberry Creek Music Festival, and he also founded the Yoav Chamber Ensemble, which performed at the Merkin and Carnegie Recital Halls. For his contribution to music Mr. Gilad has earned numerous accolades including Distinguished Teacher Award from the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, Teacher of the Year Award from the Colburn School, the Israel-America Cultural Foundation Scholarship and the Robert Simon Award in Music. |

Harold Wright Memorial Clarinet Merit
Award Competition, which
will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2012

The competition honors the memory and artistry of former Boston Symphony Orchestra principal clarinetist Harold Wright.
Recipients of this award will receive a prize of one thousand dollars ($1,000) and will perform in a concert later in the month as a member of the BWS Merit Award Quartet, which will be made up of four of our award recipients. The concert will feature the world premiere of a new work by American composer Andrew List, which has been commissioned by the Boston Woodwind Society expressly for this occasion.
Registrations end on March 1 or as soon as all audition times have been filled.
BWS Merit Award Competitions are open to all instrumentalists of age 18 to 30 regardless of race, creed, or gender. Contestants are required to play a solo piece of their choice and must provide a piano accompanist. No unaccompanied works will be considered.
Auditions are held in Room 165 at Boston University School of Music, 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215.

For a week in March 2012, the city of Rouen will become a place of musical effervescence, unforgettable musical sharing and numerous encounters with outstanding musicians. Two institutions known for their cultural richness : the CRR of Rouen, directed by Claire Paris Messler, and the Théâtre des Arts, directed by Frederic Roels, will become the hosts for the 70 candidates preselected from the first taped audition, the members of the jury and the audience for all the rounds, the concerts and all the musical encounters.
The goal of this event focuses on three levels: international, professional and educational.
The city of Rouen and its Conservatory are emblematic of Jacques Lancelot's life.
Lancelot was born in Rouen and worked as a professor of the CRR of Rouen for 42 years. Nevertheless in spite of his strong local roots, his musical stature and prestige largely surpassed French boundaries. Japan, in particular, is the home country of many professional and amateur clarinetists who are former students of Jacques Lancelot. This is the reason why both countries, Japan and France, have decided to join to organize this competition, which will take place every two years, alternating the country that hosts the competition between France, where the first (2012) will be celebrated, and Japan, who will host the second in 2014. The partnership and collaboration between these two countries to organize this competition is, to us, a unique example and also the signature trait of this competition, which will be characterized by a strong international component, and which welcomes candidates of all nationalities.
An international music competition always sets the spotlight on young talents and the accomplishment of winning a competition is always a great calling card for a young musician as well as being very helpful in gaining recognition, but we want to even further to help the winner of the first prize of the competition by offering him or her a two-year contract for a tour of concerts and recitals throughout France and other countries.
On the week after the final round of the competition, the winner of the first prize will perform as a soloist, accompanied by the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Rouen/Haute Normandie, the Jean Françaix Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, composed for and dedicated to Jacques Lancelot. In project : the winner would also be able to participate in concerts during the 2012-2013 season with the Orchestre de Besançon/Franche-Comté, directed by Jean-Francois Verdier. Besides this, many other concerts in France, Japan, United States and Costa Rica are being organized, which means that it is really the beginning of a career as a soloist that is being offered to the winner of the Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition.
The Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition has been conceived as an event of exchange, sharing, emotion and motivation for its participants, but also for the students of the Conservatory of Rouen and for all interested people.
This is why all of the preliminary phases of the competition and even its final will be open to the public. The preliminary phases of the competition, even the semi-final, will take place in the Conservatory of Rouen and will be accessible to the public by buying a ticket valid for the whole week. The final round of the competition will take place in the Théâtre des Arts de Rouen with the participation of the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Rouen/Haute Normandie and will be part of their musical season.
In addition, we wanted to go even further to share the benefits of this event by taking into consideration the special opportunities possible due to the visit of the international soloists who will make up the jury. Their presence in Rouen will provide us the opportunity to enjoy two events : a gala concert and master classes.
The gala concert will take place before the week of the competition at the Conservatory of Rouen and will be an exceptional musical event because it will bring together some of today's best clarinetists. But this is not all; the gala concert will also feature the Orchestra of the Conservatory of Rouen, conducted by Claude Brendel, which will give the students of the Conservatory who comprise this orchestra the remarkable chance to share and play with such renowned artists.
Concerning the master classes, there will be four two-hour sessions at the Conservatory of Rouen during the week of the competition. Such classes will be open to public and the participants will be recruited nationally in France, giving the possibility to every clarinet student in France of becoming an active participant in such a privileged moment of exchange.
The Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition, as the important musical event it will be, will fit perfectly and naturally in the great musical and clarinetistic tradition of our country, where it will become a great musical calling card. In fact, the French clarinet school, of which Jacques Lancelot is an important member, is known and recognized worldwide. Such tradition of excellence is represented, for example, in the great international clarinet competitions won by our compatriots and also manifests itself in the strong interest that students worldwide have in our conservatories. The CRR of Rouen itself, directed by Claire Paris Messler, is also a regular host for clarinet students who come from all over the world, specifically countries such as China, Japan and Costa Rica. The participation of our institutions (the CRR of Rouen and the Théâtre des Arts) by hosting the rounds of this competition is evidence of their enthusiasm for the development of music locally as well as internationally.

As a school of arts, the Academia de Música de Castelo de Paiva – Portugal, developed over the years a number of initiatives that have, as a goal, not only to encourage students to the musical practice and to the enjoyment of art, but also to extend the school’s project to the national and international level.
Some of those initiatives have brought to Castelo de Paiva some of the greatest figures of the national and international art scene.
“Academia Ibero-Americana do Clarinete,” which had its first edition in 2011, is one of these reference projects. The initiative, involving teachers and students from countries of the Ibero-american space, like Portugal, Spain, Venezuela, Columbia and Costa Rica, was a notable success leading to the sharing of experiences and contributing to the developments of pedagogical processes that have enriched all participants at the event, artistically and technically. Born from the synergies among students and teachers of the Ibero-american cultural space, the AIAC continues the collaboration maintained between personalities who, through their art, enhance the knowledge-sharing and the exchange of experiences, making possible the implementation of these reference projects.
It is intended that the second edition of the AIAC
will build on and reinforce these goals and
commitments. Teachers of recognized merit are the
guarantee that it will be possible to achieve these
desired goals.
Participants will be offered a space conducive to educational assignments. In addition to the individual work, all the participants will also be offered the opportunity to perform several concerts and attend (free of charge) all concerts and recitals incorporated into this event.
Who is this academy for?
Open to all clarinetists wishing to improve their musical skills in a privileged environment, the “Iberoamican Academy of Clarinet” offers a wide range of experiences, such as: Orchestra Repertoire, Mechanism and Warm up Techniques, Recital, Concerto, Contemporary Techniques, Chamber Music and Clarinet Choir.

access, without any extra charge, to the following
