Senior VIP Charles Neidich In Memoriam Reflections of the Racism Outbreak

Hello everyone,

I apologize for this very late notice. We are in the midst of a time of intense tragedy. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused horrendous loss and fear throughout the world. One would hope that the necessary isolation which the pandemic has caused would make us all more aware of the preciousness not only of life, but of social life and that the indifference of the virus to concerns of class, race, status and nationality would imbue us with an appreciation that we are all part of the same humanity. Tragically, the opposite has proved true and cities in the US have burst with the fury of righteous outrage and anger at the pernicious brutality of racism made only more vivid by the pandemic. We must kneel in sympathy with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others who have lost loved ones to the scourge of racial violence. The pandemic too has been anything but color blind as Americans of color have overwhelmingly been its victims.
It is my unshakable belief that Music and Art embody the highest ideals of humanity. They reach beyond base notions of superiority and privilege to shine a light on the wondrous things which all humanity can create.

As musicians we must be ambassadors of harmony and by that I mean advocates for the unity of all humanity: that in our diversity we are all part of the same humanity and we all deserve the same respect and love.

This Friday I would like the time which would have been my live-stream to be a time of individual introspection where each of us can ponder how in our own ways we can face our truths and help move beyond the brutality of racism to societies which respect and care for everyone of its members.

Thank you for bearing with me. I would like to close with a piece I wrote a long time ago, In Memoriam. I dedicate it to the memory of all who have lost their lives in these terrible times.

Dear Friends,

Over the past several weeks we, like many, have been waiting and watching with hope for a sign that gathering together again in large groups would be safe and welcome. Today we accept with sadness that this is not to be, and announce that our 2020 festival,
Carte Blanche!, will not take place this June as planned.  The health and safety of all is paramount and our hearts go out to those who are on the front lines confronting the reality of a pandemic.

While we are heartbroken not to be bringing live performances to the stage for our beloved audiences, our community of musicians, who are so very directly impacted and to whom we are forever grateful, are already remarkably and resiliently working with us to reschedule
 Carte Blanche! in 2021.

Thanks to the help and generosity of our entire community — board members, board advisors, donors, private and public funders, staff, ticket buyers, volunteers and community partners — ChamberFest Cleveland has thrived.  We are also fortunate to have captured every concert we have ever given on audio and video recordings. While we cannot be with you in the concert hall this June we can come to you in your homes via our Digital Performance Library on YouTube, on radio station WCLV, and with other new and fun ways to connect.  With your help nothing will deter us from the mission that inspired us:
“to nurture a deep family-like connection between musicians and audiences of all ages.”

Stay tuned and stay in touch. We will do the same. Music is alive and well and we will all be together again soon.

Yours in music,

ChamberFest Introduction to 2020 Festival

Carte Blanche!

For our exciting ninth chamber music festival coming this June, we gave ten world-class musicians carte blanche to design their own concert program. In asking them to serve as “curators,” our only prompt was to choose one of history’s great visual artists as their inspiration. The amazing results provide a glimpse into how virtuoso musicians think about music. We couldn’t be prouder to be bringing more than thirty of the world’s most outstanding instrumentalists to Cleveland to perform the dozens of scores chosen. The music is from every era, in every style, for every size ensemble; its inclusion was directly inspired by icons of visual art, from the 15th Century to the 21st. Come listen. We’re confident that you’ll not only enjoy riveting chamber works, but also understand more about the art of music… through “the music of art.”

the most significant addition to the region’s classical-music scene”   —The Plain Dealer

Launched in 2012 by Cleveland Orchestra principal clarinet Franklin Cohen and daughter Diana Cohen, concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, ChamberFest Cleveland burst onto the scene with a Big Bang! Steeped in a lifetime of participation in music festivals, the Cohens dreamt of bringing a world-class chamber music festival to the Cleveland community. ChamberFest Cleveland is now the region’s only such festival, creating thematic programming for unique chamber music experiences in a variety of venues around town. Prelude & Postlude events are structured around each concert to deepen your experience while fostering audience engagement opportunities.

OUR MISSION

To nurture a deep family-like connection between musicians and audiences of all ages.
