Principal Clarinet of the Paris National Opera Orchestra (since 1984), Philippe
Cuper was invited by the Berlin Philharmonic, « La Scala de Milano », Bavarian
Radio Symphonic, Czech Philharmonic, Moscow Symphonic, Sinfonia Varsovia,
Orchestre de Paris, National de France, Ensembles Contemporains in Paris… under
the direction of the maestros Sawallisch, Ozawa, Abbado, Maazel, Mehta, Boulez,
Prêtre, Dohnanyi, Barenboim, Gergiev, Salonnen, Conlon, Chung, Jordan…
Born in Lille, Philippe Cuper wins many international rewards like Munich,
Prague, Viotti, Slovak prize, medal in Geneva, Orvieto, Mravinsky medal in Saint
Petersburg after his studies at the Sorbonne University and at the Paris
Conservatoire (CNSM) where he got a first prize with exceptionnally high honours.
His clarinet teachers were Gilbert Voisin (Cahuzac’s student), Guy Dangain, Guy
Deplus, Henri Druart and he receive some advices from J. Lancelot, A. Boutard,
S. Drucker (New York Philharmonic) and J. Hubeau, P. Pasquier (chamber music).
He was principal clarinet of the Youth World Orchestra and at 20 he was
principal clarinet in the Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris. He worked with famous
composers like Messiaen (Quartet), Françaix (CD recording of the concerto
directed by the composer), Sauguet, Mihalovici, Rosenthal, Berio, Denisov,
Komives, Hersant, Zygel, Bacri, Connesson, Girard, Maratka… He played the
premiere of many concertos composed by Bacri, Stankovitch or Gronych (with Giora
Feidman and Eddie Daniels) in Tel Aviv or Paquito D’Rivera clarinets quintets in
Boston. Ph. Cuper taught at the CNSM : « Conservatorio Superior de Aragon »
(Spain), he is now professor at the Versailles National Conservatory and was
invited in many Conservatories and University like Chicago, Cleveland, Mexico,
Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canberra, Jerusalem, Moscow…
He recorded about 40CD (some are winner of French Grammy), he played with famous
string quartets : Talich, Kocian, Takacs, Enesco, Parisi, Benaïm… Wanderer Trio
or pianists like P. Badura-Skoda, P.L. Aimard, M.W. Chung, L. Cabasso, F.
Chaplin… Violonists : R. Ricci, A. Brussilovsky, O. Charlier, L. Korcia… the
Paris Wind Octet that he founded in 1986.

Instructor: Catina Sweedy
In demand as a clarinet teacher, clinician and adjudicator, Catina Sweedy
maintains an exclusive studio of 25 students in Northern Virginia and
internationally via Skype. Ms. Sweedy’s students frequently attend
All-County, District, and All-State band, rank superior at Solo Festival and
other competitions, and continue on to major in music education or clarinet
performance in college. Ms. Sweedy has served on the clarinet faculty of the
Judith Lapple Summer Woodwind Camp and as a guest professor at George Mason
University. She is the founder and director of The Clarinet Project channel
on YouTube. In addition to her busy teaching schedule, Ms. Sweedy is active
as a freelancer in the Washington, DC area. Ms. Sweedy was clarinetist and
director of educational outreach for the Patagonia Winds Woodwind Quintet
from 2011-2015, has frequently performed on the United Concordia Chamber
Music Series, and has played with the American Festival Pops Orchestra, the
Alexandria Symphony, and the Prince William Symphony, where she served as
principal clarinet for three seasons. Before moving to Virginia, Mrs. Sweedy
played second, Eb and Bass clarinet with the Florida Grand Opera, Miami City
Ballet, and Florida Sunrise Pops Orchestras. She has also performed with the
Florida Philharmonic, New World Symphony, and Key West Symphony. Through her
attendance at the Casals, Altenberger, Spoleto, Pacific, and Bowdoin music
festivals, Mrs. Sweedy has performed throughout the United States, the
Caribbean, Europe, and Japan. She is a past winner of the YWCA Music Club in
New York and Matinee Musical Club in Philadelphia solo competitions. Ms.
Sweedy holds her Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Harid
Conservatory of Music and her Master of Music Performance degree from the
Manhattan School of Music. She is grateful to her teachers Raoul Querze,
Paul Green, Yehuda Gilad, David Krakauer, and Ricardo Morales for their
exemplary guidance and mentoring. Ms. Sweedy lives in Woodbridge, Virginia
with her husband, two children, and menagerie of pets. She is also an avid
hiker, forager, and gardener.

Principal clarinet of the Opera
House Orchestra in Rome and winner of the recent competition for Principal
clarinet of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, he is considered one
of the most important international clarinettists. He started his career very
early as principal clarinet in “Orchestra del Teatro V.Bellini” in Catania,
playing there from 1993 to 1996. In 1997 he won the competition for principal
clarinet at the Orchestra of “Opera di Roma”, and he also played as principal
clarinet for the Philharmonic Orchestra of “Teatro alla Scala” in Milan and for
the “Orchestra da Camera Italiana”. From 2008 to 2012 he was member of the
Orchestra National de France. Winner of the International Prize “Jeunesses
Musicales” in Bucarest and awarded with other various national prizes – as the
“A. Ponchielli” prize in Cremona, the “G. Briccialdi” prize in Terni and the “Boario
Musica” prize, he has performed a brilliant career not just in the most
important Italian cities but also in many foreign countries: in Spain, Germany,
Tunisia, Russia, Sweden, Austria, France, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Czech
Republic, Holland, China, Taiwan, Japan and USA. He has recorded for “B.M.G.
Ricordi”, “Riverberi Sonori”, “Fonè”, “Accord for Music” Roma, “Trio Zecchini”,
Wicky Edition, Cristal Records. Several of his performances have been
broadcasted by radios and televisions such: RAI, RAI SAT, Radio Vaticana,
Romanian National Television, Radio France, Radio Tre, France Musique and
RaiTrade. Authors such Luis Bacalov, Renato Chiesa, Claudio Cimpanelli, Antonio
Fraioli and Nunzio Ortolano have dedicated their works to Calogero Palermo. His
career as concert player is strictly connected with his didactic occupation in
specialization courses and Master Classes in Italy and abroad. He is the author
of the text planning “Soli Orchestra” for clarinet with piano accompaniment. He
is regularly invited to take part in the juries of the most important national
and international competitions for clarinet. Calogero Palermo plays a Buffet
Crampon clarinet model RC Prestige.
