Internationaler
Klarinetten-Kongress in Mautern in der Steiermark
Mautern, Austria
Erfolg für 1. Klarinettenkongress in Mautern/Stmk
Von 28.-30. September 2007 fand in der Musikschule und im
Klostertrakt von Mautern/Stmk. der 1. Internationale Klarinettenkongress der
Österreichischen Klarinettengesellschaft statt. Die dreitägige Veranstaltung mit
Klarinettenchor-Kurs, Workshops, Ausstellungen, Vorträgen und Konzerten war die
erste ihrer Art in Österreich.
Konzerte, Ausstellungen, Proben u. a. m.

Donald Montanero, Retired 2nd / Eb Clarinetist in the Philadelphia
Orchestra, Alcides Rodriguez, Bass Clarinetist in the Atlanta Symphony, Gary

Several recitals, featuring the host faculty and guest faculty took place along
with Chamber Concerts held as well by the ensembles. The balance between the
Clarinet and Saxophone offerings was well organized. Master Classes were given
by Mr Rodriguez with outstanding students being publically coached. Don
Montanero gave 2 sessions, one with 2 Potsdam students Nicole Boyle and
Elizabeth Widzinsky covering the Weber 2nd Clarinet Concerto (2nd
movement) and the Mozart Concerto. Emphasis was given to tone and musical
phrasing and carrying lines with a well voiced even tone quality which requires
careful listening and constant attention to it. In the 2nd session
with interested participants, Montanero detailed the concepts behind this and
giving historical perspective of the Philadelphia Orchestra sound and its
evolution dating back 90 years with the Conductor appointment of Leopold
Stokowsky, who reformatted the Orchestra to change the woodwind section from a
German concept to a French concept, resulting in replacing players and bringing
in players such as Marcel Tabateau (Oboe), Daniel Bonade (Clarinet), and
others. The succession from Bonade brought in players as Ralph McClain, Anthony
Gigliotti, to the present Ricardo Morales. Recorded examples were played to
make points about the style. This brought an appreciation of where Montanero ws
coming from, having played with the Orchestra for 47 years. His appearance here
was a certain high point of this conference. Gary Whitman gave a recital and
a seminar about doubling and the importance of it relating to making a living in
a performance venue such as Orchestral playing, Broadway Show flexibility, and
the importance of being open to learning other instruments in order to make a
living no less being effective as a teacher in a Public School situation.
Regarding Music Education, Cynthis Lansford from Texas gave a seminar with
handouts about how to effectively start a Band Program in a school, covering
logistics, dealing with School administrators, parents, and how to build up a
feed-up program leading from the Middle School to the High School programs.

Numerous exhibitors, including the major Clarinet makers Buffet-Crampon,
LeBlanc, Selmer, Yamaha, Orsi-Wier, and other accessory providers were in attendance to serve the
participants numbering in the hundreds. The above
galleries give a comprehensive look at this successful workshop and should bring
attention to the work of one of the best Clarinet Studios in the USA. Unique
about Potsdam is its location, rather isolated and close to the Canadian border
near Montreal and Ottawa. In one way, this makes it feasible for students to
better concentrate on their work at hand, and with facilities almost unmatched,
all is available in-house. Everyone is encouraged to check this school.

Buffet-Crampon / Vandoren Clarinet / Mouthpiece /
Reed Workshop at Dillon Music
Woodbridge, New Jersey USA
In this very modest town just outside of the New York Metropolitan area inside
this very modest Music Store (divided in 2 buildings, one for Brass and the
other for Woodwinds), a very informative high profile workshop event took place
for students, teachers, and professionals, many from New York.
Two major figures in the Industry, Francois Kloc from Buffet-Crampon, and Steve
Baughman from Vandoren, makers of Mouthpieces, Reeds, and accessories to improve
performance of reeds. Buffet brought their whole inventory of Clarinets in the
latest models for everyone to audition and discover the differences between
them, including the R13, Prestige, RC, Vintage, and the Tosca.
Explanation in the Clarinet session included noting the design differences, and
all proved to clarify reasons for these models. Of interest, the legendary
R13 which was brought into the USA in the 50's and what made them the staple for
many years, used by over 90% of the professional players, was brought to the
fore after being tried and tested by two of the finest players, those being
Stanley Drucker of the New York Philharmonic, and David Weber.
Steve Baughman gave a computer presentation of the entire reed making process
practiced by Vandoren in France. In order to appreciate the 2 presentations, you
had to be there and be lectured by two of the best in the field. Very
impressive about this meeting is the location of the workshop, in a modest small
music store run by dedicated professionals who are not even noticeable outside
the store. Dillon Music is to be commended for making this event possible,
especially Elaine Schlatter, the Woodwind Manager who organized this exclusive
event.

Major
Clarinet Master Class with Professor Richard MacDowell
Pharr, Texas USA
Richard MacDowell, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Texas, Austin gave
a major Master Class for High School Students. Ted Lane sponsored this event.
This master class was to help high school clarinet students prepare for the
Texas All State Auditions which will be held in October, November and January.
Of interest, Texas has probably the strongest High School and College band
programs in the United States. The annual Texas Bandmasters Association
Conference represents the largest membership of Band Directors and
organizations, and their convention is the largest in the US. Given these
factors, music education is taken very seriously and this Master Class is an
indicator of support to develop students in furtherance of this commitment. Many
students develop and are well prepared to enter both the teaching and
performance professions. Mr. Lane maintains a studio of 35 clarinet students
at PSJA High School in Pharr, Texas, and was responsible for the event held
here.

Siato Kinen Orchestra Festival
Matsumoto, Japan
This renowned Orchestra, with its festival held every year under
Seiji Ozawa, former conductor of the Boston Symphony, and one of the great
conductors of our time. many of the great artist orchestral stars
worldwide perform with this special ensemble, 3 of whom are posted above:
Karl Leister, Stephen Williamson, and Ayo Neidich. Information is posted
on their website, and commentary from Maestro Ozawa below.
"The SAITO KINEN ORCHESTRA is my invaluable treasure, entrusted to
me by the late Mr. Saito. It is no exaggeration to say that
Mr.Saito made me what I am by sowing the seeds of western music in
the Japanese soil and nurturing their growth. I am quite sure that
all the members of the orchestra feel the same way and this
concerted thought of each member makes up the Saito Kinen
Orchestra. We thought that it was our mission to pass the will of
our special mentor to future generations, in our own way. So, it
was decided that we would hold the music festival in Japan, and
that is how the SAITO KINEN FESTIVAL MATSUMOTO came into being."
That was Seiji Ozawa's greeting in the first program in 1992.
In September of 1992, the Saito Kinen Festival was born in the
beautiful natural surroundings of Japan Alps Matsumoto, with Seiji
Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra as the formal nucleus and the
orchestra's concerts and operas serving as twin pillars.
The
SAITO KINEN ORCHESTRA was founded in September of 1984, when Hideo
Saito's former students came from around the world to organize a
special concert series to commemorate the 10th anniversary of
Hideo Saito's death. After this series of concerts, the Saito
Kinen Orchestra received invitations from around the world, and as
a result of these tours it was acclaimed as being of the highest
caliber.
Based on the reaction in Europe, the birth place of western
classical music, there developed a dream until now unimaginable
--"Japanese people one day transmitting western music back to its
European homeland."
An annual summer festival was a natural out growth of this unique
creation, to be known as the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto.
